The Oscillation Imperative
Generation needs the prefrontal cortex offline and evaluation needs it on—so cognitive health requires deliberate alternation between the two, an oscillation the always-open AI interface is built to prevent.
The oscillation imperative is the constructive prescription that follows from Arne Dietrich's prefrontal paradox. Creative generation flourishes when the prefrontal cortex downregulates—transient hypofrontality, the relaxing of the executive filter that lets novel associations surface. Critical evaluation requires the opposite: the prefrontal cortex fully engaged, monitoring quality, tracking strategic direction, regulating impulse. The two states are mutually exclusive at any given moment, which means the mind that both creates well and judges well must alternate between them. The cycle that begins with [YOU] on AI documents an environment that defeats this alternation: the conditions that induce hypofrontality—the smooth interface, the immediate feedback, the removal of implementation friction—are continuous rather than periodic, so the oscillation that the brain's architecture requires for both productivity and long-term health must now be deliberately engineered, not because it is a wellness nicety but because it is a neurological necessity with specifiable parameters.
