Shenpa Disguised as Virtue

The most seductive and dangerous form of AI-age compulsion—when the hook of the prompt wears the clothes of mastery, and the grinding compulsion of the person who cannot stop is indistinguishable, from the outside and often from the inside, from genuine creative flow.
Traditional shenpa—the Tibetan term Pema Chödrön has spent forty years teaching—hooks into variable reward schedules: the notification that may or may not be interesting, the refresh that may or may not deliver something new. The human nervous system is exquisitely tuned to intermittent reinforcement, and the recognition of the hook is relatively accessible: most people can identify the compulsive reach for the phone as compulsive, even if identification is not the same as freedom from it. AI collaboration introduces a form of shenpa for which recognition is structurally harder. The tool hooks not into uncertain reward but into the consistent experience of augmented competence. The output is nearly always good. The feeling of enhanced capability is nearly always real.
