Pythagoras is the right thinker for the age of artificial intelligence because the doctrine attached to his name is the founding assumption of the entire field, stated two and a half thousand years before there was a machine to test it. We know almost nothing of the man himself—born on Samos around 570 BC, founder of a brotherhood at Croton, he wrote nothing that survives—but the tradition bearing his name insists that reality is, at bottom, mathematical: that number is not a description laid over the world but the world’s own substance. Every large language model, every protein-folding system, every AI that converts human experience into vectors and gradients is the Pythagorean doctrine made operational—Pythagoreanism implemented at scale by engineers who have mostly never heard the creed they are proving.
