Durkheim's late-career prescription for the moral crisis of modernity — an <em>intermediary institution</em> between the state and the family, large enough to transcend individual interests, small enough to engage individual loyalties, capable of providing the normative regulation that neither state nor family can supply.
In the preface to the second edition of The Division of Labor in Society (1902), Durkheim argued that modern individualism produces a moral vacuum that only the professional group — the occupational community organized around a shared calling — can adequately fill. The state is too remote. The family is too intimate. Between them must stand institutions that provide shared norms, mutual accountability, collective identity, and the experience of belonging to a moral community larger than the self. This prescription becomes startlingly contemporary when applied to the AI transition. Software engineers have no meaningful guild. Product managers occupy an even more institutionally impoverished position. Designers have rich communities of practice but lack the architecture that would make those communities normatively authoritative. The absence of professional groups is not accidental — it reflects the technology industry's long-standing hostility to institutional authority — and the AI transition is exposing the cost of that absence
