The perverse epistemic windfall that accrues to manipulators once synthetic media becomes universal: when anything can be plausibly faked, authentic evidence can be dismissed as fake, and the collapse of shared verification infrastructure benefits the liar far more than the truth-teller.
The liar’s dividend names the deepest structural danger of the era of synthetic media: not that fabrications will be believed, but that authentic evidence will be disbelieved. For most of recorded history, the default assumption was that photographs showed what was there, recordings captured what was said, and documents were written by someone. That default was never perfect—forgeries existed—but fabrication required effort, and effort served as a natural filter.
