There is a particular cruelty in being made unfree by something that calls itself a convenience, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau understood it with an acuity that no amount of historical distance has made obsolete. He looked at the Paris of the philosophes—the salons, the encyclopedias, the machines of refinement—and felt not admiration but grief. Progress, he insisted, was not the same as improvement. The chains that bind us most tightly are the ones we forge ourselves, and then decorate, and then call freedom. His Second Discourse traced the mechanism: as human beings live in one another’s presence, a new passion arises, amour-propre, the desire not to be well but to be well-regarded, not to have enough but to have more than others.
