The Institute's model has been imitated widely but replicated rarely. The specific combination of adequate funding, institutional protection, interdisciplinary openness, and freedom from administrative burden that produced the Institute's outputs has proven difficult to reconstruct. The founding of Anthropic and similar safety-focused AI labs represents, in part, an attempt to create Institute-like structures for the AI era, though whether the experiment can succeed under commercial pressure remains to be demonstrated.
The Institute opened in 1933 with a founding faculty that included Einstein (recently displaced from Nazi Germany), Oswald Veblen, and Hermann Weyl. Dyson joined in 1953 after Oppenheimer recruited him, and he remained affiliated for the rest of his life.
