Institut Pasteur AI Program

In 2024, the Institut Pasteur — founded by Pasteur in 1888, now among the world's leading biomedical research centers — established a dedicated program for artificial intelligence and machine learning in biomedical research. The program's architects understood what the popular AI discourse frequently obscured: that deep-learning methods had produced genuine breakthroughs in data-intensive fields (protein structure prediction, medical imaging diagnosis, patient outcome prediction), and that these achievements belong to a specific category — Pasteur's Quadrant work applying known frameworks to new data. The program integrates AI tools with traditional experimental programs, explicitly preserving the laboratory training that builds prepared minds while leveraging computational tools for scales that unaided human perception cannot reach.
