Across the Xenogenesis trilogy, Octavia E. Butler gives the alien Oankali a diagnostic verdict on the species they have rescued: humanity carries a fatal flaw, the pairing of high intelligence with an equally deep and older drive toward hierarchy. The Oankali call it the Human Contradiction, and they regard it as lethal—not in the way a genetic disease is lethal, but in the way a structural combination of properties is lethal, the way a system optimized for two incompatible goals eventually tears itself apart.
