Human Capital Displacement
The repricing not of physical tools or industrial assets but of the skills, expertise, and professional identities that knowledge workers have accumulated over years—the distinctive form of loss that the AI transition inflicts on the people who are least equipped to hedge it.
Previous technological displacements repriced physical capital. The canal was rendered obsolete by the railway; the canal operators' skills could, in principle, be redirected to operating the new system. The workers displaced bore economic pain, but the pain was contained: they possessed bodies and general capacities that the new economy could still use. The AI displacement is structurally different in a way that Kindleberger's framework illuminates with uncomfortable precision.
