Hofstadter's name for the <em>living, context-sensitive, self-adjusting</em> character of human conceptual structures — concepts that reshape themselves under pressure from novel encounters, in contrast to the frozen statistical vectors of trained language models.
Human concepts are not fixed categories with rigid boundaries. They are living structures that reshape themselves continuously in response to new encounters. The concept of 'last letter' shifts when applied to 'iijjkk' — it might mean the last character, the last group, or the last unique letter, depending on how the perceiver chooses to parse the string. The choice is not arbitrary; it is guided by a sense of elegance, of structural fit, of what makes the analogy feel right rather than forced. That felt quality of analogical rightness is precisely what Hofstadter spent his career trying to understand and precisely what he argues current AI systems do not possess.
