The moment during the composition of You On AI when Claude produced a passage that was syntactically perfect and philosophically wrong — misapplying Gilles Deleuze's concept of "smooth space" to support a connection the concept does not actually support — and the paradigm case of what Searle's framework identifies as syntactic fluency without semantic comprehension.

Claude produced an elegant passage linking flow to Deleuze's concept of "smooth space" as "the terrain of creative freedom." The passage was rhetorically graceful, structurally convincing, argumentatively fluent. It felt like insight. Segal read it, liked it, and moved on. The next morning, something nagged. He checked. Deleuze's concept of smooth space — developed with Félix Guattari in A Thousand Plateaus — has almost nothing to do with how Claude had used it.
