Care work undervaluation is the structural pattern by which the modern economy compensates labor in inverse proportion to its social necessity. Graeber documented the consistency: nurses who hold the hands of dying patients, teachers who coax understanding from reluctant minds, elder-care workers who perform the intimate labor of keeping fragile human beings dignified — these workers earn fractions of what financial engineers, management consultants, and corporate lobbyists earn. The market does not reward social value. It rewards economic value, which is fundamentally different. AI intensifies the divergence: the technology amplifies the productivity of workers whose work is already valued by the market, while leaving largely untouched the productivity of workers whose work is undervalued.
