Barbara Liskov

The computer scientist who built the walls that make large software possible—inventor of abstract data types and the substitution principle that bears her name, Turing Award laureate, and the clearest voice on why AI has inherited the opacity of abstraction without the discipline that made opacity safe.
Liskov is the engineer of trust. In the early 1970s, when software was entering a crisis that practitioners openly called by that name—programs too large and tangled for any mind to hold, let alone modify safely—she diagnosed the root cause with characteristic precision: not insufficient cleverness but insufficient structure. Her answer was abstract data types, a discipline that bundles data with its permitted operations behind a barrier that hides implementation from caller, so that each piece of a system can be understood, trusted, and changed without re-examining the rest. She built this idea into a real language, CLU, whose innovations flowed directly into Java, C++, and Python. She gave software the Liskov Substitution Principle: a type is a genuine subtype only if you can replace it everywhere the supertype is expected and nothing the surrounding program relies on breaks.
