Asabiyyah

Asabiyyah—from the Arabic root meaning to bind, to wrap tightly—is the central concept of Ibn Khaldun’s Muqaddimah and the most precisely named variable in the AI conversation about social cohesion. It is not simply “community” or “culture” or “social capital”—though all of these are its relatives—but the specific capacity of a group to subordinate individual interest to collective purpose, to trust one another enough to cooperate, sacrifice, and act as a single body. Ibn Khaldun argued that asabiyyah is produced by the texture of how people live together: common experience, shared danger, repeated face-to-face interaction over time. Change that texture, and you change the bond. The dominant medium of shared experience is now optimised by recommendation engines for engagement rather than cohesion, which means the texture of interaction for billions of people is now engineered by a system whose objective is orthogonal to asabiyyah—and orthogonal, at scale, becomes corrosive.
