Theodor W. Adorno is the century’s most exacting diagnostician of what happens to consciousness when culture is manufactured at industrial scale. Born in Frankfurt in 1903, trained as a composer and a philosopher, Adorno brought to the analysis of mass culture a practitioner’s precision about what genuine aesthetic experience requires: the struggle with resistant material, the risk of failure, the confrontation with form that deposits what he called
truth content in the completed work. His 1944 collaboration with Max Horkheimer,
Dialectic of Enlightenment, diagnosed the
culture industry’s replacement of genuine aesthetic transformation with adequate, frictionless satisfaction—a diagnosis more precise and more urgent now that the industry has perfected its product by removing the last remaining variable: the human creator whose individual sensibility, however constrained, always retained the theoretical possibility of producing something the formula did not predict.
