The Long Demotion
The monotone sequence of corrections—Copernicus from the center of space, Darwin from the summit of life, Freud from the throne of the self—in which every serious inquiry into human specialness has produced the same result: less central than we thought.
The long demotion is the name for a pattern so regular across four centuries of intellectual history that it carries the weight of a prior: whenever the question “are we central?” has been pressed against evidence rather than assumption, the answer has bent away from centrality.
Copernicus removed the Earth from the center of space; Darwin removed the human from the summit of life’s hierarchy; Freud claimed to remove the conscious self from mastery of its own house. The structure of each blow was identical: a special status, assumed to be a natural fact, revealed to be a story told from inside a particular vantage. The resistance to each was also identical: first dismissed as absurd (the Earth obviously does not move), then narrowed (perhaps the mathematics work but do not describe reality), then bargained over (granted the body evolved, the soul remains apart), then quietly absorbed into a new common sense.
