The Spirit of AI Capitalism
The emerging moral vocabulary through which participation in AI-reorganized economies is justified—a vocabulary of amplification, democratization, and liberation that addresses the artistic critique while intensifying the structural conditions the social critique identifies.
Every transformation of the productive apparatus produces a spirit: a normative framework that makes participation feel not merely necessary but meaningful, even ennobling. The spirit of AI capitalism is being assembled from three registers of justificatory language, each borrowing from the very critiques it is designed to metabolize. The register of amplification says: the tool makes you more than you were—not merely more productive but more capable, more creative, more fully realized. The register of democratization says: AI levels the playing field, gives the developer in Lagos the same tools as the engineer at Google, reduces the barriers that previously excluded talented people from domains gated by expensive credentials and institutional access. The register of liberation says: AI frees you from drudgery, eliminates the mechanical work that consumed the majority of your time and energy, reveals the genuinely human work that was buried beneath layers of implementation.
