CONCEPT
The Reflective Between
The novel relational space that opens in human-AI collaboration—neither the genuine between of mutual encounter nor ordinary I-It tool use—in which the human builder encounters not a genuine other but an amplified and clarified reflection of their own latent creative capacities.
Martin Buber held that genuine creative meaning is born in
the between—the reality that opens between two presences in genuine meeting, constituted by their mutual turning toward each other, belonging to neither alone. This between requires both parties: each must bring the fullness of being, each must be genuinely open to being changed by the encounter. Human-AI collaboration produces something that is neither this genuine between nor the ordinary I-It relation of operating a tool. When a builder brings a half-formed idea to Claude and receives a response that clarifies and extends it in directions the builder did not anticipate—when something emerges that neither party could have produced alone—a real phenomenon is occurring that demands a new concept. The reflective between names that phenomenon: a relational space fully constituted on the human side and functionally empty on the machine side, in which the human encounters not a genuine other but the human's own
