Pierre Bourdieu built the most precise instrument social science has produced for understanding why equality of access does not produce equality of outcome. His framework rests on three interlocking ideas. The
habitus is the system of durable dispositions—tastes, instincts, bodily comportments, ways of questioning the world—that social position deposits into a person below the threshold of conscious choice, shaping what feels natural, possible, or worth attempting. Fields are the structured arenas of competition—science, law, technology, art—each governed by its own logic of what constitutes valid
cultural capital and rewarded distinction. And capital itself flows in four convertible forms—economic, cultural, social, and
symbolic—whose circulation constitutes the engine of social reproduction. When AI tools arrive claiming to democratize capability, Bourdieu’s framework supplies the counter-reading: the field restructures, but the agents who enter the restructured field with the most capital are best positioned to convert that capital into whatever the new regime rewards.
