In the 1949 Mediterranean, Braudel rejected the conventional definition of his subject — a sea bordered by various countries — and insisted instead that the Mediterranean is a civilization: a coherent analytical unit defined by shared geographical conditions, shared material patterns, shared human rhythms, and shared structural constraints that persisted across political borders and across two millennia.
