The Mask Test Probe

The Mask Test Probe is not a thesis but an instrument. It names the practice of shipping a deliberately trivial payload through a complex publishing pipeline for the sole purpose of exposing where the pipeline leaks. In the AI-augmented publishing stack, the probe is the structural counterpart to what engineers call a smoke test: a signal whose content matters less than its arrival. The probe tests three specific transit paths — CSS variables that must resolve in context, hardcoded URLs that must survive templating, raw image references that must be located rather than merely named.
