The Irritation of Doubt
Peirce's name for the uncomfortable psychological state that motivates inquiry — not methodological posture but genuine destabilization, and the energy source for the hard work of belief-revision.
For Peirce, doubt is not a philosophical position but a genuine psychological state — uncomfortable, destabilizing, energy-consuming. Its discomfort is precisely what motivates the hard work of inquiry. Without the irritation of doubt, there is no reason to investigate. Without the discomfort of uncertainty, there is no energy for the demanding process of testing, revising, and improving beliefs. The aim of inquiry is the fixation of belief — the resolution of doubt through the settled conviction that closes the uncomfortable gap. But the aim is achieved only by passing through the doubt, not by evading it. AI systems, with their structurally confident output, provide resolution without the inquiry that would earn it.

The AI system does not experience doubt. Its outputs carry no internal signal of their own uncertainty. They are generated with the same statistical confidence regardless of whether the underlying patterns are robust or fragile, and the human recipient cannot tell, from the output
