Invisible Hierarchies
Anarres's demonstration that abolishing formal authority produces informal hierarchies—often more constraining because they are harder to see and challenge.
On Anarres, the anarchist moon in The Dispossessed, there is no government, no law, no official chain of command—and yet Shevek cannot pursue his research because informal hierarchies (social pressure, respected opinions, collective disapproval) block him more effectively than any bureaucracy. The society's founding principle is that no one commands anyone, and the principle is honored—no one gives Shevek an order to stop his work. But publication is delayed. Resources are directed elsewhere. Respected figures express concern. The weight of collective opinion becomes as binding as any statute, and more insidious because it operates through solidarity rather than coercion. Le Guin's insight: that invisible power can be more total than visible power, because what you cannot see you cannot name, and what you cannot name you cannot challenge. For AI, the lesson is that democratizing access while concentrating algorithmic curation, platform control, and infrastructure power produces a new hierarchy—one the democratization rhetoric conceals.
