The Dispossessed (work)

Ursula K. Le Guin's The Dispossessed (1974) alternates between Shevek's life on the anarchist moon Anarres (chapters 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13) and his journey to the capitalist planet Urras (chapters 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12), with the timelines converging in the final chapter. Anarres was founded by revolutionaries who rejected Urras's property, hierarchy, and government, building a society of voluntary cooperation, collective decision-making, and mutual aid. It works — genuine solidarity, no poverty, no exploitation. And it suffocates: informal hierarchies replace formal ones, social pressure enforces conformity more effectively than law, and Shevek's individual ambition (his breakthrough physics research) is subtly, persistently obstructed by a community that experiences his exceptionalism as betrayal. Urras offers him freedom to research, luxury, and recognition, but its wealth is built on hidden exploitation Shevek cannot ignore.
