Ideology in Practice (Žižek)

Žižek’s reformulation of ideology as something that operates not through what people believe but through what they do—the builder who knows she is compelled, can diagnose her compulsion in detail, and keeps typing is not a failure of awareness but a demonstration of ideology’s deepest mechanism: the practice that sustains the structure regardless of the practitioner’s private convictions.
The classical Marxist account of ideology held that it is false consciousness: the ruling class produces ideas that mystify the true relations of production, and those who are deceived act against their own interests. Become aware of the mystification, and the ideology dissolves. This is the Enlightenment model of ideology critique—sunlight as disinfectant, knowledge as emancipation—and Slavoj Žižek has spent four decades demonstrating that it is catastrophically insufficient. The insufficiency is not that the model is wrong about mystification but that it locates ideology in the wrong place.
