Exit to the Woods
The specific form of exit without alternative exercised by senior technology practitioners in 2025–2026 — departing not to a competing system but to the margins, taking with them standards the remaining system cannot replace.
Exit to the woods names a distinctive form of departure that the classical
exit response did not anticipate. In
Hirschman's original framework, exit moves the departing member from Firm A to Firm B, and the existence of the alternative is what makes exit meaningful as a corrective signal. The senior engineers who left the technology industry in 2025–2026 departed to no alternative industry. They moved to rural areas, reduced their cost of living, and prepared for a future in which their expertise had lost its market value. This is exit without alternative, and it is the most dangerous form of exit for the system that loses these practitioners — because the signal is diffuse, easily misread as irrelevance rather than diagnosis, and the information that departs with them cannot be reconstructed.
