Each landing is a layer where a practitioner can stop, look around, and understand the machinery before continuing down. The staircase is walked slowly because understanding is built slowly. The walking is the training — the geological deposition of diagnostic strata.
The elevator collapses the flights. The developer steps in at natural language and steps out at running software without traversing any of the landings. She has not seen the database layer. She has not seen the API layer. She has not seen the deployment layer. Her arrival at the penthouse tells her nothing about what she passed through, because the elevator's logic abstracts away the passage itself. What the developer gains in speed she loses in visibility — and what she loses in visibility becomes invisible cost until the moment the abstraction fails.
The metaphor also captures what happens in the failure mode. When the elevator stops between floors, the passenger inside cannot simply walk out. She must find the emergency exit. She must find the staircase. And the staircase is still there — it did not disappear when the elevator was installed — but the passenger may never have walked it. The people who can navigate the stairs are the ones who walked them before, in the era before elevators, when the stairs were the only option. This is the generational asymmetry at the heart of the AI transition: the first generation built the systems and knows the stairs; the later generations use the elevator and do not.
The metaphor's power is that it does not require technical vocabulary to convey the structural insight. A non-technical reader understands immediately why the building needs stairs, even when the elevator works. The question 'what happens when the elevator stops?' is answerable by anyone who has ever been in a tall building. And the follow-up question — 'who knows the way down?' — locates the entire organizational challenge of the AI-era software industry in a single image that requires no background to grasp.
The metaphor appears in Edo Segal's foreword and is developed across Chapters 1 and 4 of this volume as the organizing image for Spolsky's framework applied to AI. It draws on the older staircase metaphor that Spolsky himself used informally to describe the layered history of computing abstractions, extended by the elevator image to capture what makes AI-generated code structurally different from every previous step.

You cannot learn the stairs by riding the elevator. The strata of diagnostic capability are built by walking the layers, not by being carried past them.
