The Conversation That Never Ends

Gadamer's deepest conviction, the one that anchored every other claim in his philosophy, was that understanding is never finished. The hermeneutic circle does not close. The conversation between interpreter and text, between present and past, between one horizon and another, does not arrive at a point of completion from which no further understanding is possible. Every act of understanding generates new questions. Every answer reveals new dimensions of the subject matter. The conversation spirals outward and downward, widening and deepening without terminus, because the subject matter of human understanding — meaning, truth, the good, the beautiful, the just — is inexhaustible.
