Contemplative Capital Depletion
The erosion of the perceptual and judgmental capacities—taste, aesthetic discrimination, the ability to feel that something is wrong before you can say why—that are formed through years of non-instrumental attention and that the ascending-friction thesis elevates to the position of highest value at the precise moment their conditions of formation are being eliminated.
The ascending-friction thesis—that when AI removes mechanical friction from execution, a higher, more human friction takes its place, shifting the premium from doing to judging—is one of the most hopeful arguments in the AI optimist’s repertoire. But Josef Pieper’s philosophy of
leisure reveals a structural problem it does not address: the judgment, taste, and vision it celebrates are themselves products of the contemplative life, formed through years of
non-instrumental attention—the designer who can feel that an interface is wrong before she can articulate why has spent years looking at design with open, receptive attention; the architect who knows how the light will fall at four in the afternoon has spent years standing in buildings and attending to light. This accumulated perceptual discrimination is what might be called contemplative capital: a reservoir of embodied understanding built through the slow work of attending
