Anarres is the habitable moon of Urras in Le
Guin's
The Dispossessed (1974), settled 170 years before the novel's present by revolutionaries who rejected capitalism and built an anarchist society based on mutual aid, collective decision-making, and the absence of private property. It works: genuine solidarity, no poverty, no legal coercion, no ruling class. Citizens volunteer for necessary labor through a coordination system (the social organism Divlab) that assigns work according to need and ability. The society is austere — Anarres is resource-poor, a harsh desert moon — but the austerity is egalitarian. No one has luxury because no one is permitted luxury. The revolution succeeded. And in succeeding, it produced its own walls: social pressure replaces legal coercion, collective opinion enforces conformity more effectively than any government, and individual ambition (
