Anarres

The anarchist moon society in The Dispossessed—a functioning utopia whose success has produced its own walls, invisible from within.
Anarres is the moon orbiting Urras where Le Guin's anarchist society exists—settled by revolutionaries who rejected capitalism, government, and property, building a civilization based on mutual aid, collective decision-making, and the absence of coercion. The society works: people cooperate, resources are shared, no one starves. It is also emotionally and intellectually constraining: social pressure replaces legal authority, collective opinion functions as invisible hierarchy, and individual ambition is experienced as betrayal of communal values. Shevek, the physicist protagonist, is not oppressed by a government but by the revolution's success—the solidarity that built Anarres has become the mechanism that prevents him from pursuing work the community has not sanctioned. For the AI transition, Anarres models how liberation produces new constraints: the democratization of capability is genuine, and the new barriers—algorithmic curation, platform dependency, the colonization of attention—are the liberation's structural consequences, not external threats.
