Affective Labor

The production of emotions, atmospheres, and interpersonal qualities — the nurse's care, the teacher's enthusiasm, the architect's judgment-as-feeling — whose depletion constitutes the specific pathology of AI-intensified immaterial labor.
Affective labor is the work of producing and managing affects — the nurse who creates a caring atmosphere, the teacher who generates enthusiasm, the team leader who sustains morale during crisis. Its product is not informational content but a quality of interpersonal experience that cannot be reduced to what is said. AI cannot perform affective labor; this is not a temporary limitation but a structural impossibility, because genuine emotional engagement requires the investment of real feeling. As AI automates routine cognitive work, the specifically human contribution increasingly consists of what machines cannot provide: judgment-as-affect, taste-as-feeling, vision-as-excitement. The cost is the continuous depletion of the affective commons — the shared emotional capacity that makes social life possible.
