The Withdrawal Test

The practical procedure for operationalizing the independence ratio — setting the AI tool aside for a deliberate period and observing what the builder can do alone. The only reliable diagnostic for distinguishing scaffolding from prosthesis.
The withdrawal test is the empirical procedure through which the purpose of scaffolding is verified. Because supported and unsupported performances look identical from outside, and because commercial AI tools do not voluntarily implement graduated withdrawal, the learner must conduct her own withdrawal — setting the tool aside for a period, attempting genuine work without it, and observing the result. Segal describes doing exactly this in his epilogue: 'setting the tool aside for hours and working with nothing but a notebook and my own thinking. The results are uneven.' Some days the independent thinking feels sharper than before; other days the blank page feels like a fall from a great height. Both outcomes are data. Both are the kind of evidence Bruner's framework demands — and neither can be collected without the discomfort of deliberate withdrawal.

The test is uncomfortable by design. If the scaffold has been functioning as prosthesis, the withdrawal will feel like loss. If the scaffold has been functioning as scaffolding, the withdrawal will feel like challenge — difficult, but productive. The emotional quality of the experience is itself diagnostic.

The test has three structural requirements. First, deliberate timing: withdrawal must be scheduled, not accidental. An unplanned failure of the tool during a crisis is not a test; it is an emergency. Second, genuine work: the task must matter, must require real cognitive effort, must produce something the builder cares about. Pretend withdrawal on trivial tasks proves nothing. Third, observation without immediate intervention: the builder must sit with the difficulty long enough to discover what she can do, not instantly reach for the tool when struggle begins.

In its absence, individual withdrawal tests are the only data any particular person can obtain about her own cognitive trajectory under AI partnership.
