The test is uncomfortable by design. If the scaffold has been functioning as prosthesis, the withdrawal will feel like loss. If the scaffold has been functioning as scaffolding, the withdrawal will feel like challenge — difficult, but productive. The emotional quality of the experience is itself diagnostic.
The test has three structural requirements. First, deliberate timing: withdrawal must be scheduled, not accidental. An unplanned failure of the tool during a crisis is not a test; it is an emergency. Second, genuine work: the task must matter, must require real cognitive effort, must produce something the builder cares about. Pretend withdrawal on trivial tasks proves nothing. Third, observation without immediate intervention: the builder must sit with the difficulty long enough to discover what she can do, not instantly reach for the tool when struggle begins.
The test produces three kinds of information. Performance gap: the difference between augmented and unaugmented output. Process awareness: what the builder notices about her own cognitive operations when working without support. Transfer potential: whether capabilities that appeared only in AI-augmented sessions turn out to be available independently once the tool is absent.
The test is the personal version of what Bruner's educational framework demands at institutional and societal scale. No one is measuring the independence ratio across large populations. In its absence, individual withdrawal tests are the only data any particular person can obtain about her own cognitive trajectory under AI partnership.
The procedure is implicit throughout Bruner's educational writing but is named and operationalized in the Bruner — On AI volume. It parallels established practices in other domains: aviation's requirement that pilots maintain hand-flying proficiency, medicine's emphasis on teaching trainees to perform procedures before automating them, and deliberate-practice protocols in skilled performance.
Deliberate timing. Scheduled withdrawal, not accidental failure, is what produces usable data.
Genuine work. The test requires real tasks that matter to the builder, not artificial exercises.
Observation without immediate intervention. Sitting with difficulty long enough to discover what independent capability exists.
Emotional diagnosis. Whether withdrawal feels like loss or like productive challenge is itself diagnostic information.
The personal version of societal measurement. In the absence of large-scale independence-ratio studies, individual withdrawal tests are the only data available.
