Spotlight consciousness is the cognitive architecture that comes online as the prefrontal cortex matures through adolescence and into early adulthood: a narrowed, directed beam of attention that has been trained by years of experience to filter the relevant from the irrelevant. The spotlight is what lets the gardener see the aphids; it is also what makes the gardener blind to the beetle.
