Profanation of Expertise
The specific mechanism by which AI moves deep professional expertise from the domain of the set-apart to the domain of the ordinary — not through its destruction but through the demonstration that its outputs can be approximated by a tool that requires no comparable sacrifice.
Profanation is not the elimination of skill. The expert's capabilities remain intact; in many cases they remain superior to what the tool produces. What is eliminated is the sacred status the community invested in those capabilities — the reverence accorded to those who had undergone the ordeal of acquisition, the implicit prohibition against casual appropriation, the shared sense that something important would be lost if the expertise were treated as merely ordinary. The AI transition profanes expertise by demonstrating that its outputs can be approximately replicated through a tool requiring no apprenticeship, no years of practice, no embodied knowledge earned through failure and correction. The approximation is imperfect. The approximation is sufficient. And sufficiency is the operative word, because the sacred does not survive the question "Is this really necessary?" once the question can be answered, even partially, with evidence that it is not.
