Negative dialectics, the title and method of Adorno's 1966 masterwork, refuses the central operation of Hegelian dialectics: the synthesis that reconciles thesis and antithesis into a higher unity. For Adorno, certain contradictions—freedom and necessity, individual and society, happiness and the conditions that make happiness possible—cannot be resolved without falsifying one or both terms.
