📝 Abraham Moles built the bridge nobody thought could stand: from Shannon’s engineering of information to the aesthetics of a symphony, a poster, an architectural facade. Trained in both physics and philosophy in postwar Paris, he held doctorates in each and spent his career refusing to choose between them, producing in 1958 his foundational Information Theory and Esthetic Perception—the work that gave the humanities a rigorous vocabulary for questions they had always asked in impressionistic terms. His central insight was that a message carries two irreducible components: aesthetic information, which is bound to the specific form of the message and destroyed by paraphrase, and semantic information, which survives translation into any code. The redundancy of a message measures its predictability; the entropy measures its surprise; and genuine aesthetic experience, Moles argued, lives at the productive boundary between order and disorder—where the signal is complex enough to carry novelty but structured enough for the receiver’s perceptual apparatus to make meaning.
