The greening of the self is Joanna Macy’s name for a perceptual shift that her framework treats as the most foundational of the three dimensions of the Great Turning. It is not the dissolution of individual identity but its accurate grounding: the recognition that the self is not the thing inside the boundary but the entire pattern of relationships that the boundary provisionally encloses.
