Freedom's Right: The Social Foundations of Democratic Life, published in German in 2011 and in English in 2014, is Honneth's most systematic reconstruction of the institutional conditions under which freedom is realized in modern societies. The book argues that freedom is not primarily a negative condition (the absence of coercion) or a reflexive one (the capacity for autonomous choice) but a social condition: the institutional structures through which individuals can realize themselves in interaction with others. Three spheres — personal relationships, the market economy, and democratic public life — each require specific institutional arrangements to function as spheres of freedom rather than unfreedom. The book provides the theoretical bridge between the micro-level analysis of recognition in The Struggle for Recognition and the macro-level analysis of democratic citizenship in The Working Sovereign.
