The Fourth Mode of Production
The emergent production logic the AI transition appears to inaugurate — individual direct production, in which a single person with an AI tool produces artifacts that previously required teams.
Economic theorists have identified three modes of production: markets (coordination through price), hierarchies (coordination through authority), and commons-based peer production (coordination through shared infrastructure and distributed collaboration, as Yochai Benkler named it). Castells's analytical framework, applied to the AI transition, suggests that a fourth mode is emerging: individual direct production, in which a single person with an AI tool produces artifacts that previously required one of the other three modes. This mode does not require the price mechanism of markets, the authority structure of hierarchies, or the collaborative infrastructure of commons. It requires only an individual with a need, a language interface, and a subscription. If the fourth mode proves durable, it represents a fundamental shift in the political economy of knowledge production whose implications for employment, inequality, and social organization are as profound as the industrial revolution's shift from household production to factory production.
