Field Restructuring (AI)

Bourdieu’s account of what AI actually does to competitive arenas: it does not level the field but re-grades it, shifting which forms of capital command positional advantage while preserving the structural logic through which capital reproduces position.
When [YOU] on AI describes the AI threshold as collapsing the imagination-to-artifact ratio, it is describing what Bourdieu’s sociology calls a field restructuring: a redistribution of the specific forms of capital that determine positional advantage within a structured competitive arena. Before December 2025, the field of technology production was organized around a specific distribution of cultural capital in its technical form—the embodied knowledge of programming languages, system architectures, deployment methodologies, and the tacit competencies that years of practice in recognized institutions could deposit. The AI threshold did not dissolve this field; it restructured it. The bottleneck migrated: from the capacity to build to the capacity to judge what should be built and direct powerful tools toward that judgment.
