Extractive Development at the Individual Level

Extractive economies deplete the resource base that makes them possible. The mine produces real wealth. The wealth is real. But the land is depleted, the water table contaminated, and the ecosystem that sustained the community before the mine arrived is damaged in ways that take decades or centuries to repair. Conventional metrics measure the extraction as success. They do not and cannot measure the regenerative capacity of the substrate being extracted.
