Daniel Pink arrived at the same moment that behavioral economics was dismantling the rational-agent model of human decision-making, and he made a complementary case at the level of motivation. His 2009 book Drive synthesized four decades of research by Edward Deci, Richard Ryan, Teresa Amabile, and others to argue that for complex, creative, heuristic work—the kind that increasingly defines economic value—the carrot-and-stick model is not merely ineffective but actively destructive. The force that produces extraordinary effort in knowledge workers is intrinsic: autonomy over one’s own work, the pursuit of mastery as an asymptote one approaches without ever arriving, and a sense of purpose that connects individual effort to a meaningful larger project.
