Conversation as Cognitive Technology

Goody’s insight that conversation is the oldest technology of the intellect—and AI conversation’s unprecedented combination of oral responsiveness, written permanence, and encyclopedic scope constitutes a genuinely new cognitive medium with affordances and distortions that no previous medium has exhibited.
Speech is the oldest technology of the intellect. Before writing, before notation, before any external medium for recording or manipulating thought, there was conversation—the real-time exchange of utterances between minds, each utterance shaped by what preceded it and shaping what followed. Jack Goody understood that speech itself was a technology of the intellect—the first externalization, the moment when thought left the sealed interior of the individual mind and entered a shared medium where it could be examined, challenged, and developed by others. Conversation has properties that no other cognitive medium replicates: it is sequential but not predetermined, constructive rather than merely transmissive, responsive in real time to the other mind’s challenges and objections. It also has limitations that Goody documented thoroughly: it is evanescent, bounded by the knowledge of the participants, and distorted by the social forces—power, status, politeness, the fear of being wrong—that shape what is said and what is left unsaid.
