The Cognitive Rebound Effect

The structural mechanism by which AI efficiency tools increase rather than decrease the total demand for human cognitive labor—the Jevons Paradox operating on attention and creative capacity rather than coal.
When a technology makes a resource cheaper to use, the rational response of every actor in the economy is to use more of it—and if the demand for that resource’s services is sufficiently elastic, and if sufficient latent applications exist, total consumption rises past the pre-efficiency baseline. This is the Jevons Paradox, and the cognitive rebound effect is its operation in the domain of human mental labor. AI tools reduce the marginal cost of cognitive production: a line of code, a paragraph of analysis, a design iteration becomes dramatically cheaper to produce. The direct response is to produce more of them. The indirect response is to use the savings to fund new projects that also demand cognitive labor. The structural transformation response is the emergence of entirely new categories of cognitive worker—the non-technical founder building software through natural language, the writer producing at volumes previously impossible—who did not exist before the efficiency crossed the economic threshold that made them viable.
