Circuit as Mind

Circuit as mind is the operational form of Gregory Bateson's ecology of mind: the claim that the unit of mental process is not the individual organism but the complete feedback loop connecting organism to environment and back again. A blind person navigating with a stick has a mind that extends to the tip of the stick; cut the circuit at any point and you cut the mind. The unit of mind is the circuit, and the quality of the mind that emerges from any circuit depends on the quality of the circuit's design—the structure of its feedback loops, the bandwidth of its channels, the presence or absence of corrective mechanisms, the richness of its metacommunicative signals.
