Authority of Tradition

Gadamer's most controversial rehabilitation — the authority that tradition exercises not through inertia but through having been tested by generations of interpreters and found to contain insights that resist easy assimilation.
The Enlightenment treated tradition as accumulated baggage — inherited beliefs the rational subject must examine and, where found wanting, discard. Authority, on this view, is legitimate only when grounded in reason; the authority of tradition is no authority at all but inertia dressed in the vocabulary of wisdom. Gadamer argued this picture rested on a false dichotomy. Reason does not operate in a vacuum; it operates within a tradition — within questions, methods, standards, and commitments developed through centuries of intellectual effort. The authority of tradition is not the authority of the past over the present but the authority of something that has been tested. A tradition endures not because people are too lazy to question it but because generations of interpreters have engaged with it, challenged it, revised it, and found it continues to illuminate aspects of experience that resist easy comprehension. In the AI age, this earned authority stands in contrast to the authority of data — the authority of comprehensiveness without the interpretive engagement that transforms corpus into tradition.

Gadamer's position was controversial in its own time and remains so. The Enlightenment's hostility to tradition had been hard-won through centuries of struggle against religious and political authority. Gadamer's rehabilitation risked, to his critics, reopening the door to dogmatism.

Gadamer's defense was that the authority of tradition is not the authority of mere age. It is the authority of what has survived the testing of successive generations of interpreters. Plato's dialogues are authoritative not because they are old but because twenty-four centuries of readers have brought their questions to them and found the dialogues could still teach them.

The AI introduces a new form of authority: the authority of data. Claude's training encompasses a vast portion of human textual output. This comprehensiveness gives its responses a kind of authority — the authority of the system that has 'read' everything. But comprehensiveness is not the same as understanding. The authority of data is not the authority of tradition.

The tradition's authority comes from its participation in an ongoing conversation — a dialogue between generations of interpreters, each bringing questions and receiving answers that transform both questioner and tradition. The AI's training data is not a tradition in this sense. It is a corpus processed statistically rather than engaged hermeneutically. The statistical processing identifies patterns. It does not engage with meaning.

Gadamer's account developed in Part Two of Truth and Method as part of his broader rehabilitation of prejudice, authority, and the humanistic tradition against Enlightenment rationalism.

The account drew extensively on Gadamer's engagement with classical philology, the history of rhetoric, and the legal-hermeneutical tradition in which the authority of precedent operates in ways analogous to the authority of tradition in philosophical and literary interpretation.

The contemporary risk. When the authority of comprehensiveness (what the AI has 'read') is mistaken for the authority of understanding (what the tradition has tested), the interpreter substitutes statistical plausibility for genuine insight.
