The Authentication Crisis
The structural disruption that each new information technology produces when it severs the correlation between surface quality and substantive credibility—first diagnosed by Ann Blair in the print era, now the defining epistemological challenge of AI-generated content.
In the manuscript era, the provenance of a text was relatively traceable: you could identify the scriptorium, the scribe, and the institutional context of production. The printed book disrupted this traceability. Anyone with access to a press could print anything, and the reader had no reliable way to determine whether the content had been vetted by competent authority. Forgeries, plagiarisms, and unauthorized editions proliferated—not because print was dishonest but because it severed the connection between the physical object and its institutional genealogy that manuscripts had preserved. The response, developed over decades, was an entirely new infrastructure of authentication: title pages identifying the author and publisher, imprimaturs from ecclesiastical or secular authorities, systems of copyright and privilege, and eventually the apparatus of scholarly publishing—peer review, editorial boards, university presses—that allowed readers to make preliminary quality judgments based on institutional context rather than direct provenance inspection.
