David Foster Wallace’s name for the effortful, never-finished practice of choosing where awareness goes—the daily work of staying conscious of one’s own life against a powerful default current of self-absorbed semi-consciousness, which the technologies of engagement are built to maintain and deepen.
Wakefulness as discipline is the central positive prescription in David Foster Wallace’s moral vision, delivered most completely in his 2005 Kenyon College commencement address and sustained throughout his fiction. His parable of two fish who do not know what water is—who have never had to think about it—is a parable about the default setting: the brain’s automatic tendency to process experience as centered on the self, to move through the world half-asleep in unexamined reaction. Wakefulness is the alternative to this default, and it is not a state that can be achieved and maintained. It is a discipline: an effortful, repeated, often unglamorous act of choice, always against the current, never finished. To be awake, in his sense, is not merely to be conscious of yourself but of others—of the genuine reality and full interiority of the strangers in the supermarket checkout line, the people in the traffic jam, everyone dismissed by the default setting as backdrop. His characters are often acutely, exhaustingly awake to their own self-deceptions and to the social performances everyone around them is also engaged in; his narrative technique of footnote-within-footnote is itself a formal enactment of consciousness trying to remain awake to its own workings rather than letting the main text paper over what is really happening.

This capacity is a muscle, and like a muscle it can atrophy. The sleep technologies do not coerce; they offer ease, and each time the ease is chosen over the difficult choice, the capacity for the difficult choice weakens. Real freedom is the capacity to choose the hard thing against the gravity of the default, and the machines make the default harder to resist than it has ever been.

The main debate concerns the prescriptive weight the concept can bear. Wallace himself died by suicide in 2008, and critics argue that a philosophy of wakefulness developed by someone who could not sustain it is at best aspirational and at worst a counsel of guilt. Defenders argue that this is precisely its authority: not the advice of someone who found it easy but the hard-won knowledge of someone who understood both its necessity and its difficulty, and who insisted on it precisely because he felt the pull toward the alternative more acutely than most. A second debate concerns whether wakefulness as a personal practice can be an adequate response to structural problems. The attention economy is a political-economic system backed by enormous resources; meeting it with individual discipline may be necessary but insufficient, the equivalent of demanding personal virtue in the face of an industrial hazard. Wallace’s response, embedded throughout his work, is that the personal discipline is not a substitute for structural change but its precondition: people who are asleep cannot organize to change the structures that keep them that way.
